Since I needed a little break from WoW, I decided to give some of my other games I have some TLC. Yesterday’s game was Guild Wars.
If you’re interested in what Guild Wars is about check here. Here are a few wordss that will help describe it: MMO w/o monthly fee, Lot of solo content, beautiful graphics and pretty darn good quests and stories.
I bought the game a few months ago when I was in my “I MUST HAVE THIS NOW” phase. It’s embarrassing, I know. So I bought the original game and the first expansion. I played the game for about 2 hours and got bored with it. I couldn’t jump in the game and that bothered me. (How Anaen can play it with no jump option amazes me.) So I let it get dusty and went back to WoW.
I figured I’d give it another shot. Still can’t jump, but I decided to play a little more. My main character that I play the most is a necromancer. I am not sure why I always choose this class when I first start a game (Diablo 2, EQ, WoW [warlock], Guild Wars). Maybe it IS a control thing. So I revive him from the dead and start stomping on monsters again. He was level 5 when I started yesterday I think.
I found I REALLY liked the questing system. When you accept a quest, a marker appears on the mini-map. It direction you to the location of the next objective. If you are in an instance and the quest is in another, it will direct you to the nearest instance zone to move your quest along. I love it. There have been a few things I haven’t figured out (Like what exactly does the freaking King’s son want for his lady?!? I guess I should just go look it up online), but most of them have been great fun.
When I started playing, my necro only had a few spells. They kinda sucked really. There was an AOE dot, a lifetap and something I can’t even remember. That is how bad it was. I realized that you can take on a secondary profession and I finally chose Elementalist. If I’m gonna do necro damage, I might as well blow the hell out of stuff too. Fun stuff! I finally found a quest that lead me to my necro trainer and she gave me the summon dead ability! Woot! MINIONS! MINIONS I TELL YOU! The Necro minion system is a little bitter sweet though. On one hand they are pretty powerful killing machines. On the other hand, once raised, they start to die. Their health bar slowly dwindles to nothing and they fall lifelessly to the ground. How do you get these supernatural warriors you ask? You have to kill something that leaves a corpse and then resurrect the corpse. So, to have a fighting force, you must have something killed first. And the more you kill, the greater the army you can build… until the first minion you summoned passes away into nothingness. Kinda sucks they don’t last long. I pray that I get an improved undead-summoning-killing-machine spell soon. They just don’t seem to last long enough for my tastes.
So I log off last night at level 7. A little less than 1/2 to 8, but I had a blast. The game didn’t really feel like much of a grind. I leveled a little slow for my taste, but after WoW I can survive. Hell, after Dark Age of Camelot’s 49-50 level grind, I can do ANYTHING! Will I keep playing it? Dunno. I’m glad I gave it another shot.
